Journal Entry 2: The Necklace

Ten years for nothing.

The ending of The Necklace is actually insane.

Mathilde loses a necklace she borrowed from a rich friend. Instead of owning up to it, she freaks out. She and her husband buy a replacement diamond necklace for 34,000 francs—which is a ton of money. They borrow from everyone. Then they spend 10 years living in poverty to pay it back. Mathilde basically ruins her looks and her life working to pay this debt.

Then comes the Sunday where she runs into her friend again. She finally confesses. Her friend is totally shocked and goes, “Wait, you bought a diamond one?” Turns out the original was fake glass worth like 500 francs.

I felt so bad for her, but also… why didn’t she just say something? She wasted a whole decade just because she was too proud to admit she lost it.
